Early 20th century Chinese wood and lacquer folding table screen with inscriptions An ancestral Chinese wood and lacquered folding table screen with inscriptions stands on sturdy legs. A carved wooden handle on top makes the item easily portable. Inscribed inside and out with character gradations, the screen measures 100 cm high. It bears the inscription "Liu Family", the names of six Taoist officials and a poem by the emperor. Chinese table screens have a long history. They were often used to get away from the daily grind, considered very useful in the days of working at home or in a restaurant where table separation was useful.
