Vintage Directors Desk Chair by Thonet 1930s

This chair was produced by the renowned Thonet Company in the 1930’s as a director’s office chair. This piece is an interesting example of Thonet moving away from their decorative pieces to more abstract forms of interconnecting geometric shapes. Within this chair, we can find a total of seven simple U shaped wooden parts, all of different sizes and interlocking to create an overall modern design that use the Thonet trademark craftsmanship. Another new element is a use of the burgundy hue on all it’s surfaces as opposed to the standard use of the brown (veneer) colour which Thonet had used for decades. Overall, the elegant proportions of circular geometric forms, together with the dazzling pattern of the veneer makes this piece a truly wonderful example of the sophisticated 1920’s furniture design. This piece is in great vintage condition. The recent restoration of the surface has fully revived the extremely rich dark red colour of the entire piece, showing off the beautiful patterns on all surfaces. The entire piece has been hand finished by Shellac and Nitro varnishes in order to achieve a greater gloss finish.
