After studying to be a furniture and interior designer in the Dutch city maastricht, he started working for Wagemans & Van Tuinen in 1936. First as a furniture maker and in 1939 he became head of the design- and manufacturing department. Ruth was Artifort’s first permanent designer. He was well-known for his cutting edge designs for mainly living rooms. His most famous chairs are the Congo (1952) and Penguin chair. He also inspired a lot of other designers at Artifort. Theo Ruth died in 1971, but his designs are still famous around the world as one of the highlights of Dutch design.
