Vintage Art Deco frame in carved and gilded wood by Emile Bouche, France 1940

Frame signed E. Bouche, Art Deco, carved and gilded wood, 40’s – France Exquisite Montparnasse frame signed by Emile Bouche, French decorator from the 1930s - 1950s. Made in the 1940s in the purest Art Deco style, but with classic Louis XIV style reminiscences. This frame is made of carved, stuccoed and gilded wood. The design is based on the mixture between the sinuous and the geometric: these incisions are made with a burin. The result is a decorative and very special frame. It has a label on the back. The Montparnasse frames date back to the beginning of the 20th century when the most bohemian painters settled in this neighborhood of Paris. As they were artists with very little means, they carved the frames themselves from modest pine and left them ungilded. The patinas are all different, with traditional frames being cream or gray. The carving itself is ornate and seeks the style of Louis XIV and Louis XV. This way of making was understood as an extension of art, the frame being something more than just a frame, and soon, they began to be gilded. Many of the painters of the School of Montparnasse and the School of Paris framed their Post-Impressionist and Cubist paintings with the Montparnasse frame. Good condition based on age and use.
