Vintage Paradiset Sofa by Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist for Nordiska Kompaniet, 1950s

This Paradiset sofa was designed by Kerstin Hörlin-Holmqvist in 1958 and manufactured by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden. It features beech legs and its original blue velour fabric. The organic shapes are significant for works of this fantastic female designer’s during Mid-Century era. It’s a great example of how she managed to mix classic lines with modern design. The sofa has the typical rounded form of Holmquist with button back upholstery and arched wooden base. The elegant curves and the overhanging back and armrest creating an almost sculptural appearance. These curved lines nicely run over in the solid beech legs. Kerstin H. Holmquist created a collection of upholstered pieces for NK - Nordiska Kompaniet in 1956-57. She was employed at NK Triva, a furniture workshop and architect studio where she created a collection for one of her many exhibitions: the lounge chair Eva and later its masculine counterpart Adam. To compliment the two she later created the Paradiset Sofa and also a foot stool - the Fig Leaf. The Swedish modernist architect and furniture designer Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist hails from a robust early-century generation of Scandinavian female furniture designers. This stunning piece is in original vintage condition with traces of age. It has fading and discolourations on the fabric, traces of wears and stains. The upholstery is original also.
