About this vintage design furniture

A large, powerful, graphic oil on jute canvas by Greek artist Daniel Panagopoulos, known as Danil, dated 1989 on the reverse. It is framed in a natural oak American box. The size includes the American crate, the burlap measuring 132 x 92 cms. Danil began studying medicine in 1943, but gave it up and turned to the School of Fine Arts, where he studied painting in the studio of Konstantinos Parthenis in 1944. In 1954, he won a scholarship to Paris, where he completed his studies in 1957, perfecting his painting and learning the art of mosaic. In 1964, he held his first solo exhibition at Galerie J in Paris, followed by solo shows in various cities in France, Greece and other countries. He also took part in group and international exhibitions such as "Trois propositions pour une nouvelle sculpture grecque" (Three proposals for a new Greek sculpture) in 1964 at the Teatro le Fenice, Venice, as part of the Biennale, as well as the 1965 Sao Paolo Biennale and the 1982 Europalia. A connoisseur of abstract art, he adopted its doctrines from his early years of residence in Paris, creating his first series of boxes from common, cheap materials, which he painted with ordinary colors, then pierced, tore and crumpled. Later, he created compositions influenced by hard-edge, optical and kinetic art, before returning to flat surfaces. Reference : 302351
