Vintage 3-seater leather and aluminum sofa by Jørgen Høj for Niels Vitsøe, Denmark 1960

Jørgen Høj for Niels Vitsøe, sofa, leather, aluminum, Denmark, circa 1960. Exclusive leather sofa designed by Jorgen Hoj who worked in the same atelier together with Poul Kjaerholm. The Sofa which was manufactured by Niels Vitsøe is supported by a well-balanced aluminium frame with refined black details which are recognizable for the designs of Høj. The leather has a deep cognac color, shows a beautiful patina and forms a striking contrast with the steel base. Clearly influenced by his teacher, Poul Kjaerholm, Høj designed a sleek shaped sofa on aluminium legs. Experimenting with these shapes, materials and forms, Høj created his unique and modernist style which was not very common in the 1960s. The sofa is exceptionally rare and remains in good condition. It features a superb patinated aniline leather in a warm cognac color with some traces of age and use. The foam has been renewed. For a period of time Jørgen Høj worked closely with Poul Kjærholm on several projects. Influences are clearly visible. Jørgen Høj, (1925–1994) was trained as a metalworker and upholsterer. He won the Silver Medal awarded by The Danish School of Arts and Crafts in 1947 and graduated from the same institution in 1950, running his own design studio from 1955. He was an all-round architect who dedicated himself to the design of furniture, interior, and graphics. Reference : 295256
