About this vintage design furniture

A set of 6 Model FD193 Danish Mid century modern teak and black leather dining chairs designed by Inger Klingenberg for France & Søn. Danish designer Inger Klingenberg (1932-1997) produced some of the most compelling furniture designs of the period and was a key designer in helping to establish the Danish Mid-century modern movement as such a force throughout the 1950’s and 60’s. Often overlooked compared to her peer group she produced cutting edge designs that exuded quality and innovation. Along with her own design company, established in 1958, she worked with two of the most prestigious furniture makers of the time, Fristho Franeker and France and Sons, and also designed a range of fabrics and jewellery. The Model FD193 chair, as featured here and presented in dark stained teak with black leather seats, is one of her most famous and sought after designs. The ‘floating’ seat appears to be disconnected from the base with a curve that echoes the seat back and this combination makes the chairs both comfortable and stylish. The leather upholstery in virtually unmarked and the teak frames, with their fine jointing work on the top of each leg, shows only minor wear and knocks commensurate with age and use. Produced by France & Daverkosen, which later became France & Son (and later still, CADO) the chairs have the maker’s imprint on the back of the front stretcher and the France & Son decal (2 present) underneath. It’s clear that over the years the curvature and sizedepth of the back was changed slightly and it therefore looks like this set of 6 is comprised of 2 sets covering different production periods. On this basis the chairs vary a little as shown in one of the photographs, but as can be seen from the photos in general, this is not something you would pick up unless the chairs were stood directly back to back or side to side. I therefore only mention it to offer a complete description as it certainly doesn’t detract from the set as a whole. These chairs can also be purchased as a complete dining set along with the stunning Knudsen and Lind “Yin Yang” Model 550 extending table (also produced by France & Son) as shown in the last photograph – please see my other listings on this website for further information and prices.
