BILL COLEMAN - AMISH PHOTOGRAPHER - PHOTOS SIGNED BY THE ARTIST
Artist: Bill Coleman, an American legendary photographer of the Amish.
"He was one of the few photographers allowed by the Amish in Pennsylvania, USA, to take pictures of their daily lives. He became friends with them. Bill Coleman, born May 17, 1925, in Connecticut and raised in New York City, served as an infantryman in World War II and was a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany. After the war, he attended Penn State University where he studied English. He then graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology. Bill Coleman, a legendary photographer and former resident of State College (PA, U.S.), died Jan. 28, 2014. In 1951, Bill Coleman opened his first studio in State College where he photographed portraits for more than 30 years. In addition to international, cultural photography, he took iconic photographs of the Amish community for 40 years. Bill Coleman was able to work closely with the Amish, a community rarely photographed due to religious beliefs. Jock Lauterer, associate professor of photojournalism at the University of North Carolina and former professor of journalism at Penn State, says Bill Coleman's images of the Amish are "honest, poignant, intimate and heartbreakingly beautiful at the same time, while still being authentic." Lauterer adds, "You look at his work and wonder how such a master photographer was able to gain the respect and access of such a community. That alone sets him apart from so many others who have gone before him and who have stereotyped the Amish. Coleman's photographs do not stereotype, they venerate and preserve a way of life rich in the fabric of our country."

Possibly the pictures have become a little fainter over the years, but you can't tell. They have always hung in the shade.
