Born in Florence, Tempestini completed his studies in industrial decoration at the Porta Romana Art Institute in 1929. His career as an interior architect, furniture designer and illuminator took off in the early 1930s, during which time he was also active as a scenographer. Tempestini devoted himself to designing furniture and decorative objects, creating works for the Cantagalli ceramics factory in Florence, as well as for Murano glass producers Séguso and Cappellin. In 1934, he worked on the exterior renovation of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni on the Parterre di San Gallo in Florence for the Exposition Littoriali. Later, in 1938, he opened a studio with architects Nello Baroni and Pietro Porcinai, before co-founding the legendary Italian lighting company Arteluce in 1939, in collaboration with designer and engineer Gino Sarfatti. In the 1950s, Tempestini designed luminaires for Lightolier and began collaborating with the John B. Salterini Company of Brooklyn, New York. Salterini, an Italian émigré, had begun his career in journalism before becoming a manufacturer of luxury wrought-iron furniture. Tempestini's modernist outdoor furniture for Salterini was reminiscent of the indoor seating produced by companies such as Knoll or Artifort: his chairs and other furnishings feature organic curves and seductive, unconventional shapes. His work integrates perfectly with Salterini's handcrafted creations, which reflect Gothic Revival and Art Deco influences. Together, the two designers created successful collections of garden and patio furniture for the Salterini company of the same name. Tempestini soon became a household name in the United States. His designs were first presented to the American public in 1951 via the Gimbels and Suniland Furniture department store in Houston, Texas. Even today, his boldly styled, elegant outdoor furniture is highly sought-after by collectors the world over.
