After studying graphic design in Stuttgart, Karl Wiedmann worked for several advertising agencies in New York and Stuttgart. He began designing typefaces in the 1950s, notably the commercially successful Prisma. He also created the Optima typeface in 1954 for the Berlin foundry H. Berthold AG. This typeface, characterized by its slender, elegant letters, is still widely used today in publishing and visual communication. Karl Wiedmann also taught typography at Stuttgart's College of Applied Arts for over 20 years, training several generations of graphic designers. His contribution to the history of typography and graphic design remains a major one.
