Peter Hvidt

He designed several chairs for export by economizing on space and packaging requirements for transportation. In collaboration with Orla Molgaard-Nielsen, Hvidt designed many pieces of furniture such as the Portex (1945) and the Ax (1950) armchairs which are iconic pieces of the midcentury modern design. Biographie Peter Hvidt was born in 1916 in Denmark. After studying at the School of Design in Copenhague, he worked for different workshops before he founded his own studio in 1942. Two years later, he decided to collaborate with Orla Molgaard-Nielsen, they are the founders of the Hvidt & Molgaard company (end of the activity in 1970). They designed iconic pieces of furniture but they also participated to architecture projects at the beginning of the 1970s with Hans Kristensen. They worked around a project of multi-family housing. Hvidt received two rewards in 1951 and in 1954 at the Triennale in Milan. His creations are exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New-York, at the National Gallery in Melbourne and at the Danish museum of Art and Design in Copenhagen.
