Rietveld is a particularly prolific designer. Throughout his career, he has designed numerous armchairs, as well as chairs, tables and lamps. His creations are distinctive for their simplicity of form and line. Wim Rietveld was born in the Netherlands in 1924. He is the youngest son of the great designer and architect Gerrit Rietveld. At an early age, he developed a passion for design and chose to study it at the Hague Academy. On completing his studies, he landed his first job as a designer with the publisher Gispen. He designed various pieces for office furnishings. His aim was to design furniture that was solid, practical yet accessible to the widest possible audience. The University of Delft offered him a post in 1973 in the Industrial Design department. Rietveld is considered one of the greatest Dutch designers of his generation.
