The designer's pieces are characteristic of his aesthetic and rationalist approach. His creations are mainly made of light woods, cherry or varnished lemon. The enfilades, tables and armchairs he has designed testify to his taste for sobriety and his desire to design functional elements. Gustave Gautier was born in France in 1911. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-arts de Nantes, then enrolled in the architecture section of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. An internship with René Herbst had a profound influence on his vision of design. During this period, he made contact with the Union des Artistes Modernes. In 1937, he received his first official award at the Universal Exhibition. In 1945, Gautier decided to devote himself to decoration. Two years later, he presented a whole range of mass-produced furniture at the Salon d'Automne and at the Salons des Arts ménagers and des Artistes décorateurs. He was a member of several important design groups, such as the Association des créateurs de meubles de série.
