After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he began his career as a sculptor and industrial designer. He worked for the Hagenauer and Bakalowits brands, before setting up his own studio in 1948. He is known for his futuristic lighting fixtures, often in the shape of spheres or drops, as well as for his mirrors and sculptures. His creations are characterized by an inventive use of materials, notably glass, metal and plastic. Emil Stejnar won several awards for his work, including the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1954. He also took part in numerous international exhibitions, notably in Paris, Stockholm and New York. Sadly, he died prematurely at the age of 43 in New York, where he had emigrated in 1951. His creations, however, continue to be appreciated and sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts the world over.
