His furniture is characterized by chrome, metal and cylindrical shapes. His chairs are particularly well known: the Prima, Seconda, Quarto and Quinta (1986) are legendary pieces. Mario Botta was born in Mendrisio in 1943. He trained as a draughtsman and then studied architecture in Venice, graduating in 1969. He met Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn during an internship. These encounters were to revolutionize his approach to architecture. In 1970, he set up his own practice in Lugano. He has built over 300 buildings, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Santo Volto church in Turin and the Cymbalista heritage center in Tel Aviv. Botta has received numerous international awards over the course of his career, including the 2005 International Academy of Architecture Prize, the European Union Prize and the Merit Award for Excellence in Design. He is a leading figure in architecture and design.
