Gijs BAKKER

He worked as a designer for well-known companies such as Artifort, Hema and Polaroid. Some of his creations can be found in several major museums and exhibitions. In 1974, he designed the Strip chair, a timeless piece which always seduces thanks through a real modernity. Biography Gijs Bakker was born in 1942 in the Netherlands. He studied design and jewelry in Amsterdam then Stockholm. In 1992, he became the Design Counsellor for Cor Unum, a ceramic manufacturer. One year after, he founded the Droog Design collective with Renny Ramakers, historian and design critic. He was the artistic director until 2009. In 1996, he founded with Marijke Vallanzasca “Chi ha paura…” (Who is afraid of..? in English). The purpose was to demonstrate the importance of a jewel and to prove that it is more than a fashion accessory. He also taught in universities including the Institute of Art in Arnhem and the Institute of technology and the Design Academy in Eindhoven. He also contributed to the development of Taiwanese design as an artistic director for the Han Gallery.
