Dorothee Becker was born in Germany in 1938. She studied languages at the University of Frankfurt and Munich. She left her homeland for London, then Paris, and in 1960 decided to settle in California. She returned to Germany with her husband Ingo Maurer. Her greatest success was the Uten Stilo, a piece that facilitates storage. Even today, she continues to design practical pieces.
