Fritz HALLER & Paul SCHARER

Both are famous for having collaborated on a range of storage systems for the USM company in 1963. Consisting of chromed steel tubes, metal or glass coverings and elements connected by a simple screw connection, this unique modular system quickly became an iconic piece. Biography Fritz Haller was born in Switzerland in 1924. He began his career with an apprenticeship as a draughtsman in the early 40s, then moved to architectural offices in Rotterdam before working in his father's architectural practice in Solothurn. In 1961, he designed USM's new premises in Müsingen, and two years later developed the USM furniture system with Paul Schärer, grandson of USM's founder and new CEO. This specific piece of furniture quickly met with great success, being appreciated and purchased by the directors of the famous Rothschild bank. Since 2001, USM Haller has been part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
