After studying at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, Frank (Josef) fled Germany in 1933 to escape Nazi persecution. He immigrated to the United States in 1939, where he studied at the New Bauhaus School in Chicago. He went on to work for several design companies, including the packaging design firm Raymond Loewy Associates. Frank (Josef) was a pioneer in the field of product design, having created objects such as clocks, radios, typewriters and kitchen utensils. He is also known for creating the logo for the Camel cigarette brand. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the Gold Medal for Industrial Design from the American Institute of Architects in 1972. Frank (Josef) was also Professor of Industrial Design at the School of Visual Arts in New York for many years, where he influenced many of the next generation of designers. His work continues to inspire designers worldwide.
