Although he trained as a cabinetmaker, Kjaerholm had a greater affinity for steel. He liked to marry it with other materials such as leather, rope and rattan. The "PK22" armchair (1955/56) is his best-known creation. It is part of his "PK" collection of tables, armchairs and stools. Poul Kjaerholm was born in Denmark in 1929. He trained as a cabinetmaker, then studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. He then joined the famous Scandinavian publisher Fritz Hansen, where he worked for a year. His chair prototypes were particularly successful, and he began a collaboration with Ejvind Kild Christensen in 1955. From 1951 to 1967, the designer developed a whole collection of furniture called "The Kjærholm Collection". In 1982, Fritz Hansen took over exclusive production of this line. The Danish designer received numerous awards for his creations. He was awarded the Grand Prix at the XI Triennale in Milan in 1957 and the Lunning Prize in 1958. His creations can be found in the permanent collections of the V&A Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
