The materials and techniques used by the designer were directly derived from the possibilities offered by industrial production at the time. His aim was to produce mass-produced furniture without neglecting the importance of beauty. The sobriety of his furniture is still a source of inspiration today. René Gabriel was born in France in 1899. He studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. In 1919, he presented his first creations at the Salon d'Automne. He then participated in the creation of the French Embassy presented at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. As early as 1927, he began researching the creation of mass-produced furniture, proposing furniture composed of juxtaposable and superimposable elements. In 1944, the French Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning entrusted him with the design of emergency furniture. He was subsequently appointed President of the Société des Artistes Décorateurs. In tribute to his major role in design, the Salon des Arts Ménagers created the famous Prix René Gabriel.
