His work is characterized by a great sobriety of form and a real economy of materials. Pieces such as the Sitwell chair (1955), the 101 armchair (1955) and the 701 table (1954) are representative of his innovative style. Hans Bellmann was born in Switzerland in 1911. He began his studies as a draughtsman, then enrolled at the Bauhaus in Dessau and Berlin. He later became an architect with the Mies Van der Rohe studio. In 1946, he decided to settle in Switzerland as an architect and industrial designer. From then on, he designed a series of furniture pieces that enjoyed great success in the 50's and 60's. He was commissioned by the Kunsthaus Museum in Lucerne to design the scenography for the exhibition Art et Culture de l'habitat. At the same time, he passed on his knowledge at schools such as the School of Applied Arts in Zurich, the Ulm College of Design and the School of Arts and Crafts in Basel. Bellmann has had a profound impact on the history of Swiss design.
