Hans Bellmann

His work is characterized by a real sobriety and an economy of means. The Sitwell chair (1955), the 101 armchair (1955) or the 701 table (1954) are representatives of his innovative style. Biography He began his studies by a draughtsman training, and then he joined the Bauhaus in Dessau and Berlin. Thereafter, he became an architect for the Mies Van der Rohe workshop. In 1946, he decided to set up in Switzerland as an architect and industrial designer. Therefore, he created a variety of pieces of furniture and knew with great success during the 50s and 60s. He was responsible for the scenography of the Art and Culture of habitat exhibition at the Kunsthaus museum in Lucerne. At the same time, he taught at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich, at the Ulm School of Design and at the School of Art in Basel. Bellmann made his mark in the Swiss design history.
