Rowland studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where he was influenced by the ideas of the famous designer Charles Eames. After working for various design companies, Rowland founded his own design studio in 1958. In 1964, he created the 40/4 chair, which was a major innovation in the world of furniture. So named because it could be stacked up to 40 high chairs high, with only 4 legs touching the floor. This revolutionary design allowed efficient use of space and great convenience for storage and transportation. The 40/4 chair became very popular and became an icon of industrial design. It has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Industrial Design Award from the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Rowland also designed other furniture and products, but the 40/4 chair remains his most famous and influential work.
