Passionate about sculpture, he transposes the techniques of this art to create chairs with a sculptural design. Their distinctive feature is that they are made of braided steel wire, offering an original and seductive perception of form, space and geometry. The "Diamond chair" (1952), the "Bird chair" (1956) and the "Barstool chair" (1952) are his most striking works. Harry Bertoia was born in Italy in 1915. At the age of 15, he moved to the United States, a country he would never leave. After studying art and design at Cass Technical High School, he enrolled at the Cranbrook Academic of Art, where he met the Eames couple. They worked together on bending techniques for plywood, but met with disagreements that put an end to their collaboration. In 1950, Harry Bertoia worked with Knoll, designing the legendary Diamond Chair two years later. Following successive commercial successes, he decided to devote himself exclusively to his first passion: sculpture. Harry Bertoia's chairs, with their geometric shapes and daring techniques, turned modernism on its head.
