Product description
Complete set of 6 'bentwood' bistro chairs made in ca. 1920 by Fischel, after the design No. 18 by Thonet. Produced in the early 20th century in then Czechoslovakia. All chairs in excellent condition, with a beautiful patina. All chairs sturdy and stable.
Thonet was the great inventor (1859) of the so-called bentwood, steam bent beech wood. Probably the still greatest success in the world of interior design. With bentwood it was possible to make elegant, lightweight chairs that were at the same time unprecedentedly sturdy. Moreover, the chairs could be shipped as a kit.
Thonet's patent soon expired (ca. 1870), which very soon led to the emergence of several competitors, who themselves became big names. These included father and son Fischel. Son Fischel had learned the trade in Thonet's factories. Thonet's competitors did not shy away from copying Thonet's designs.
The design of this set is Thonet's so-called No. 18, probably the most successful model next to the No. 14.
Excellent set of early 20th century bentwood chairs with usual signs of use, beautiful patina. Construction has been checked and screws replaced where necessary. All chairs sturdy and stable.
The chairs are on display in Groningen. You are welcome to drop by. Or you can have the chairs reliably delivered by courier.
