Wilkins is best known for his Fresco range for G-Plan.Although all Wilkins' work was produced by G-Plan, little biographical information is available about this designer. In the 1960s, British furniture manufacturer G-Plan set the standard for mainstream modernist furniture in the post-war UK. To compete with imported Scandinavian furniture, G-Plan hired designer Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921-2003), who created several designs for the company. It is assumed that Wilkins was strongly influenced by Kofod-Larsen's designs, his pieces often being mistakenly attributed to Kofod-Larsen.In the wake of Kofod-Larsen's success, Wilkins' Fresco range was influenced by Scandinavian design. Conceived in 1966 and launched the following year, G-Plan's most successful range includes a suite of furniture for every room, all finished in richly grained, elegant teak. The design itself combines the elegant, sculptural aesthetic of Italian furniture with the unique Scandinavian style so popular at the time.In addition to the Fresco range , Wilkins designed the Astro coffee table (1969), with clear references to the IN-50 coffee table (1944) by designer Isamu Noguchi, and the Spider side table (1970). Both feature curved teak bases similar to the shapes that gave them their names, although the latter is often referred to as Astro in contemporary catalogs.Wilkins is thought to have continued designing for G-Plan until the mid-70s, but details of his life outside his work for the manufacturer are unknown. Today, the Astro coffee table is one of Wilkins' most sought-after pieces, as are the less rare but equally elegant Fresco furniture and enfilades. Reference : 283830
