Vintage slatted ash wood bench by Gijs Bakker and Wim Wilson for Castelijn, Netherlands 1970s

Beautiful slatted wood bench in solid ash wood by Gijs Bakker and Wim Wilson for Castelijn Holland 1970s. This slatted bench was designed in the 70s for Castelijn and is often referred to as the “Museum” bench. Of course, it can be used both for public spaces and home use. In good Dutch design tradition, the bench is sober and abstract in its lines, with strong similarity to the Martin Visser designs. However, this design does distinguish itself from Vissers’ in several ways; there are 7 horizontal slats (opposed to 5), all slats are square in shape (opposed to rectangular) and the feet are glued to the slats (opposed to screwed). In contrast to the Visser benches, the bench is more narrow so it looks like the bench is actually longer. This specific example is painted black by factory specifications and still features the original sticker below the bench. It is built very solid in a very strong solid ash wood. The bench is much more rare than the BZ benches by Visser since they were built in smaller numbers. It was acquired from the first owner that bought the bench new in 1974 in a design shop in the Netherlands. The bench is in an excellent and original condition and still really well in its paint. No damage is visible and the bench was very well taken care off. Reference : 246404
