At the age of sixteen, he trained as an overglaze painter at the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory from 1962 to 1966. As an apprentice to art director Nils Thorsson, Ivan gained a great deal of knowledge in the field of ceramics. In the years 1970-72, Ivan studied ceramics in Hagi, Japan, where he learned to throw bowls and fire ceramics. Back in Denmark, he was re-employed as a ceramist at Royal Copenhagen, continuing his collaboration with Nils Thorsson and creating ceramics in a separate studio until 2004. Since then, Ivan has worked as a freelancer at Royal Copenhagen and as a guest lecturer at the Danish Design School.
