Esavian Mid Century Desk Esavian (ESA) by James Leonard adultteacher school desk, circa 1950, Mid-century British design with a Formica top and beech Bentwood legs. The unit has marks and golden patina consistent with age and use. This is the more rare adult sized desk. This desk can be used as compact dining tables or work from home desks. Esavian (ESA) Educational Supply Association had offices in Grays Inn Road in 1879. ESA was a business set up to supply schools with a range of equipment from desks and furniture through to books and equipment. Elementary Education Act 1870 paved the way for compulsory education, attendance was made mandatory until age 10 in 1880 and as such a whole new market opened. ESA manufactured their range and had a factory in Stevenage which specialised in wood furniture production. Designer James Leonard joined ESA in 1946 after being demobbed from the RAF - James Leonard worked at ESA until his retirement in 1982 and ESA closed its doors in 1987 when manufacturing became cheaper overseas.
